The Braves Are Bringing Back Their Super-Racist "Screaming Savage" Logo

$

I thought we'd all agreed that this was a terrible idea?

Pictured above is the Atlanta Braves' new batting practice cap for this year. Apparently, it was a feature of Braves jersey from 1967–1989 before someone came to their senses and retired it in favor of the regular A that appears on caps and the still-questionable-but-less-questionable-than-the-Screaming-Savage tomahawk. But all the league's teams change their batting practice caps every few years, and the Braves have decided that this gives them the perfect opportunity to reintroduce a little racism to their franchise!

As one of only four professional teams in the three major sports — sorry, hockey, you don't get to be major unless you actually exist — to be named after Native Americans/Indians, the Braves were already on shaky ground. (The other three are the Cleveland Indians in the MLB and the Washington Redskins and Kansas City Chiefs in the NFL.) Some people see these nicknames as honorifics and argue that the tribes often endorse them, while others claim that they're offensive and degrading, particularly when, as is the case with the Redskins, their names are literally racial slurs. Meanwhile, more and more college teams have been running away from such nicknames every year.

No matter how you feel about the names as a presence in professional sports, though, it's hard to feel anything but repulsion regarding this particular logo. It's actually called the "Screaming Savage." That's not all right.

Anyway, the moral of this story is, if baseball teams didn't need so many damn hats, this wouldn't be a problem.

The Knicks Are The Best Rapping Team In The NBA

Here's proof in “Lord of War” Rasheed Wallace and the awesomely flat-topped Iman Shumpert lighting up a Freeway mixtape.

The New York Knicks are flying high in the Eastern Conference without the services of Iman Shumpert, a lockdown perimeter defender who tore the ACL and meniscus in his left knee last season. Shump's been busy, though, growing a massive flat top and piecing together a very respectable debut mixtape, "Th3 #Post90s," which blows away heavy handed NBA rap offerings like Metta World Peace's "My World". As a general rule, athletes should be barred from recording studios, but Iman Shumpert is the exception.

Here, Iman and Rasheed Wallace have guest spots on Philadelphia rapper Freeway's "Hol Fam," which you should listen to solely just to hear Sheed "rain verbal terror on fake MCs," and warn "peon ass cats" about his guns.

You can (legally!) download Freeway's "Black Santa" EP here, and download Shumpert's mixtape "Th3 #Post90s" here.

The 9 Goofiest Sports Movies Of 2012

Sports movies often tap into the most treacly and cliched tendencies of storytelling. Here are 2012's weirdest examples.

SPORTS. Not only are they often on TV — they make for the weirdest movies! I've highlighted nine of the stranger sports-related — sometimes very loosely sports-related — movies of the year, because we need to simultaneously challenge the fact that directors often err toward cliche and conventionality when they make sports movies as well as recognize the fact that this cliche-driven approach often manifests itself in Gerard Butler taking off his shirt. Huge thanks to Rotten Tomatoes for help with screengrabs and information, as well as the ratings, which I've included next to the movies' names and used to rank them from best to worst.

Premium Rush — 76%

Premium Rush — 76%

Summary: Joseph Gordon-Levitt's psychotic bike messenger has to deliver an extra-dangerous, extra-special message that is liable to get him killed, except for the fact that he's the best bike messenger in Gotham, nahmean?

Review excerpt: "The whole film sizzles with urban aggression." — Bruce Diones, The New Yorker

Saving grace: That, despite the insane and bizarre premise of focusing a high-octane action/chase movie on bike messengers, it's actually good! (Also, Michael Shannon!)

Salmon Fishing In The Yemen — 67%

Salmon Fishing In The Yemen — 67%

Summary: Ewan McGregor tries to make fly fishing in Yemen a thing. (Fishing is a sport, so back off.) Surprisingly for Ewan McGregor, he does not get naked.

Review excerpt: "Proudly, it has no conviction to offer, just the comforts of its genericness." — Wesley Morris, the Boston Globe

Saving grace: I mean, McGregor and Kristen Scott Thomas are excellent actors, and the movie got solid reviews and, hilariously, was nominated for a bunch of Golden Globes. That title, though: hysterical, fascinating, bizarre, and totally meaningless all at the same time.

The Man With The Iron Fists — 51%

The Man With The Iron Fists — 51%

Summary: The RZA makes complicated instruments of death for a bunch of battling tribes in China that somehow includes Russell Crowe. Kung Fu movies are the original sports movies, and The Man With The Iron Fists is basically an adoring, deranged ode to Kung Fu movies.

Review excerpt: I'm going to give pro and con reviews for this one:

Con: "Lunatic, slipshod, absurdly violent, horribly acted, and borderline incomprehensible." — Ty Burr, the Boston Globe

Pro: "As erratically enjoyable as it is consistently ridiculous, the martial arts pastiche "The Man With the Iron Fists" is the latest evidence that the vogue for neo-exploitation cinema shows no sign of flagging." — Manohla Dargis, the New York Times

Saving grace: Are you kidding???? IT WAS DIRECTED BY AND STARS THE RZA.

Arian Foster seems like a good dude.

Indianapolis head coach Chuck Pagano has been battling leukemia all year, and he returned to the Colts' sideline for the first time today. After scoring, Texans running back Arian Foster made the very classy move of paying tribute to Pagano — he touched the #CHUCKSTRONG banner that hangs in Indy's stadium, then gave his trademark bow.

Here's video of Foster, including his touchdown run.

The Tennessee Titans finally found a way to overcome their offensive woes.

The Titans' offense has been a disaster this season. Against the Jaguars, though, they found a solution to this problem: don't play offense.

With 2:00 left in the first half, trailing by 7, Zach Brown picked off a Chad Henne pass and took it 79 yards for a touchdown.

Halftime was of no help to Jacksonville. After receiving the opening kickoff, the Jags again went three-and-out, and again Reynaud took the punt all the way, this time traveling 81 yards.

The first Monday after the final games of the NFL regular season is known as Black Monday for a reason. Five general managers also lost their jobs.

Black Monday did not disappoint on the last day of 2012. The annual bonanza of coaches and front-office types getting axed touched seven coaches, five general managers, and nine teams in total, or just over a quarter of the NFL's 32 squads. Here are the victims, why they were fired, and whether it was the right move.

In a total win move, the network didn't shy away from an intimate moment between Scott Norton and his husband during the 2012 PBA Chameleon Championship.

Norton is pictured with his husband, Craig Woodward (L), following his victory.

Via: outsports.com

According to OutSports, the network addressed Norton's relationship and was very frank about the whole thing.

The telecasters were very matter-of-fact. Scott’s husband, Craig, was introduced as his husband or spouse interchangeably. Scott Norton defeated 48-time champion Walter Ray Williams and two-handed phenom Jason Belmonte on his way to the win. He had to plow through the stepladder field from fourth place to the championship, beating the first Middle Eastern player (from the Bahrain national team) in his first match. Norton was very complimentary towards the player who soldiered through an attack of gout in the first match and had Scott on the ropes midway through the match.

While the 30-year-old bowler came out as a teenager, he didn't publicly comment on his sexuality until last year.

"It is extremely important for me to come out to show other gay athletes, both current and future, that it is important to come out to show that we are just like everyone else. It's important to show people that being gay has nothing to do with one's ability to do anything as a man, least of all compete at the highest level of sports."

Watch the final moments of the championship.

Norton celebrates his win with his husband around the 2:15 mark.

Pennsylvania Governor Sues NCAA Over Penn State Sanctions

At a press conference Wednesday, Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett announced his lawsuit against the NCAA over the Penn State sanctions implemented after assistant coach Jerry Sandusky's sex scandal.

NCAA's punishment included stripping the football team of 14 victories under head coach Joe Paterno and fining Penn State University $60 million, which will go toward programs that prevent child sexual abuse.

Pennsylvania legislators have advocated for that money to stay within the state, even asking the NCAA in November to give the $60 million to local programs. On Wednesday, Gov. Corbett appeared alongside Pennsylvania business owners to argue that the sanctions have been detrimental to the local economy.

Corbett laid out the football program's key contributions to Pennsylvania's economy:

Joe Paterno's family spokesman has issued a cautious statement of support for the lawsuit:

"As we have not yet had an opportunity to review the lawsuit filed by Governor Corbett today, we cannot comment on the specifics of the litigation. What we do know, however, is that this matter is far from closed. The fact that Governor Corbett now realizes, as do many others, that there was an inexcusable rush to judgment is encouraging."

Highlighted by a Stanford drummer who has probably smoked a few Rose Bowls in his day.

This year's Rose Bowl, between Stanford and Wisconsin, not only matched up two strong football teams: it also featured marching bands that helpfully demonstrated the differences between the Midwest and the West Coast.

Wisconsin's band worked hard to deliver an excellent performance.

No, you're not. That was when you were good. Now you're sort of OK, and you play for that other NBA team in Los Angeles.

This is made even funnier by the fact that 1) the Lakers aren't even the most recent team that Odom has played for — he spent a terrible season in Dallas last year, and 2) Odom started his career with the Clippers.

Rockets center Omer Asik tried to grab a rebound, which he's usually quite good at — unfortunately, this time it went a little awry.
