Steve Spurrier Doesn't Know How Old You Have To Be To Vote

It's so hard to keep track of this election stuff when you have college football to coach.

Earlier today South Carolina football coach Steve Spurrier was giving a press conference when someone asked him about the election.

Source: @DarrylSlater

Immediately after this comment Spurrier began talking about how it's weird that you have to be 35 to rent a car, 6'8" to ride a roller coaster, and a woman to have an abortion. If we read between the lines of Steve's statement on elections, chances are those players will not be voting today. Sorry, South Carolina. There are more important things going on. Like installing a nickel blitz.

Is It Roger Goodell's Fault That Anthony Davis Had To Sit Out?

The New Orleans Hornets coach does not appear to approve of the NBA's new concussion policy. So who is responsible for it?

Image by Gerald Herbert / AP

After suffering a concussion last Friday when he was accidentally elbowed by teammate Austin Rivers, New Orleans rookie Anthony Davis spent Saturday night at home while the Hornets played the Bulls in Chicago. This was a seemingly normal precaution until his coach Monty Williams told reporters: "When you're dealing with the brain, I guess what's happening in football has impacted everybody. He got touched up a little bit last night. That happens a lot in basketball. It's just that now they treat everybody like they have white gloves and pink drawers, and it's getting old. It's just the way the league is now."

The NFL's concussion rules are prominent because of increasing fears about the health of football players amid high-profile suicides and lawsuits. But it's not the only league with a concussion protocol. The NBA's policy, instituted at the end of last year, matches those of Major League Baseball, the National Hockey League and even NASCAR. In fact, NASCAR drivers have been required since 2003 to be cleared by an infield doctor before returning to the track (though unlike other in sports, they have to admit that they have a concussion before being put through tests and treated). The NCAA and a variety of children's sports programs also have similar policies.

The NBA's current rules were put into place after a number of players missed games in 2011 because of concussion symptoms, including Chris Paul. So far this season, JJ Barea and Taj Gibson have also found themselves alongside Davis on the concussion bench.

For players like Davis — and for his coach — sitting out makes sense. The 19-year-old rookie signed a multi-million dollar contract and could be the future of the franchise. Multiple concussions can rob athletes of their ability to remember plays, react quickly and even figure out how to get to the stadium. Having safety procedures isn't being scared — it's being smart.

Who Is The NFL Voting For?

Owners lean Republican and players Democrat, while the league itself is neutral.

Image by John Gress / Getty Images

Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler sparked a flurry of response on Twitter and blogs when he announced in a radio interview that he was supporting Mitt Romney in the presidential election. "Yeah, I have been following the debates and everything. I do live in Tennessee," he said. "I'm voting for Mitt this election season." Cutler's pro-Romney comment was the most publicized NFL political pronouncement of the year, but plenty of other players and league figures have taken sides as well.

According to figures compiled by the Center For Responsive Politics, the league has a PAC that has spent $840,000 in lobbying in the first half of 2012 alone and $1.62 million in 2011. The PAC has also given $207,500 to Democrats during this election cycle and $220,000 to Republicans. In the Presidential race, the PAC and individuals who work for the league have given $15,400 to Romney and $14,600 to Obama. The NFL PAC has also given large amounts of money to retiring Maine Senator Olympia Snowe and Maryland Senator Ben Cardin.

According to a February analysis by the Center, individual team owners, executives and players have spent large sums on candidates outside of the NFL PAC (though all owners and many members of their family donate substantial amounts to the NFL PAC).

According to FEC records, New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft donated $40,000 to an Obama Super PAC in 2012 and $5,000 to his campaign in December of 2011. Philadelphia Eagles owner Jeff Lurie put a large amount of money towards Obama's campaign in 2008, but individual records do not indicate that he donated any this time around. Steelers owner Dan Rooney, donated $35,000 to an Obama PAC. Members of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers owner Malcolm Glazer's family have spent tens of thousands for Obama.

On the right, members of Titans owner Bud Adams' family have donated to Romney, though individual FEC records don't indicate that he has given any money. Redskins owner Daniel Snyder has put $55,000 towards Romney's campaign and PACs that support it. Members of Cowboy owner Jerry Jones' family at first supported Rick Perry and later gave money to Romney. Saints owner Tom Benson gave Romney $125,000. Texans owner Bob McNair gave what seems like the most of any individual NFL owner, spending $200,000 on right-leaning Super PACs.

Players have also spent a substantial amount of money supporting candidates. According to FEC filings in this election cycle (the totals include donations to PACs friendly to particular candidates as well as the candidates themselves):

• Vernon Davis donated $7,500 to Obama
• Antrel Rolle donated $5000 to Obama
• Josh Barrett donated $250 for Obama
• Chris Carr donated $201 for Ron Paul
• Marques Colston donated $73,300 to Obama
• Jahari Evans donated $10,000 to Obama
• Kellen Winslow donated $1500 to Obama
• Phillip Rivers donated $2500 to Rick Santorum
• Anthony Adams donated $250 to Obama
• Michael Clayton donated $250 to Obama
• Domonique Foxworth donated $5000 to Obama

While few mentioned their support publicly, Ravens wide receiver Torrey Smith (below) tweeted out this picture of himself casting his vote.*

"If you think any president can fix our problems in 4 years you are kidding yourself..." he wrote, adding a picture of an Obama-Biden sign. "It takes time."

The Rockets Are The Most Exciting Team In The NBA

WHAT. Yes! Here are 14 reasons why. They are all GIFs.

FIRST GAME: Houston 105, Detroit 96

1. Jeremy Lin dishing to James Harden. This is one of Lin's 8 assists and two of Harden's 37 points.

Lin and Harden are the Rockets' two big 2012 acquisitions and generally rockin' dudes. Together, they form one of the most fluid and dynamic backcourts in the league, each capable of handling the ball, running the pick and roll, and finishing at the rim. While Harden's the more versatile scorer and better overall player, Lin seems to have improved his jump shot in the offseason, and together, they stabilize a rotation that's otherwise filled with young, uncertain assets.

2. Lin to Omer Asik

2. Lin to Omer Asik

Asik is the Rockets' new center and a lockdown defensive specialist. Houston hopes he can be one of the league's best defenders, but his offensive game is raw at best. Here, Lin feeds him a perfect pass into the paint, and Asik has an easy time using his size and the defense's surprise to finish.

Salt Lake City's Sam Gordon looks like Jim Brown running through tackling dummies.

The quarterback takes hits, she straight arms, she even stretches the ball over the goal line on one score. Amazing.

Her stats for season: 1,911 rushing yards, 8.2 yards-per carry, and 25 touchdowns (also, 65 tackles), while playing in the Gremlin age group (mostly nine year-olds) of the Ute Conference.

She's the freakin' Galloping Ghost of the Gremlin League.

Via USA Today:

According to her father Brent, who posted the video, there were 172 kids in her district who tried out for a Gremlin team. During tryouts, Sam tested the fastest in every single speed and agility drill.

Hey Dad: you should consider a different track. Maybe some Speed Metal?

That face. She's a tackle- and heartbreaker.

21 Mustaches In Sports You Should Emulate This Movember

November is a month for elections, a month for giving thanks, and most importantly, a month for growing mustaches to raise awareness for men's health issues. Let these men be your mustache spirit guides.

Image by Associated Press / AP

When the calendar ticks past October and the final shreds of all dignity and dietary pretense are discarded in the garbage below 20 empty Snickers wrappers, the countdown to the end of all dignity and dietary pretense in swimming pools of gravy begins.

More importantly, it's time to grow a mustache.

November is Movember, of course, that month when men — manly men — grow mustaches and facial hair to raise awareness for men's issues, like prostate cancer and some men's inability to grow mustaches or facial hair.

The follicle frivolity is all for a good cause — learn more or donate here — and it's also good to celebrate those athletes who celebrate Movember all year long. For the 'stache is not a fad nor a gimmick, but a life choice for some. Handlebar, pencil-thin, twirled whiskers, and more, these are the 21 people in sports making Rollie Fingers, Scott Player, and other esteemed mustache pioneers and perfectionists proud.

But before we begin...

Dishonorable Mention: Philip Rivers

Dishonorable Mention: Philip Rivers

Save yourself the energy of thinking about Philip Rivers' ill-conceived attempt at a 'stache and instead spend your time seeking out those who best poke fun at Philip Rivers' ill-conceived attempt at a stache, which looks like it came out of the defect bin at the costume store.

21. The NBA Mustache

21. The NBA Mustache

NBA mustaches are a dying, almost dead breed. Adam Morrison and Michael Jordan just about made that official. Sure, there's a Spencer Hawes every once in awhile, but these days the upper-lip torch is carried by a lackluster group: Dwight Howard, Carmelo Anthony, etc. Wherefore art thou, Kurt Rambis, Reggie Theus, Larry Legend, James Edwards? And can someone please hire Stan Van Gundy already to bring back some mustache legitimacy to the league?

NFL Players Shave Heads For Coach Battling Cancer

Colts head coach Chuck Pagano's leukemia is in remission, and his team made a grand gesture in support of his fight back.

Source: @jimirsay

The Indianapolis Colts continue to be one of the best stories of the 2012 NFL season, and finally, there's some good news surfacing about leukemia-stricken coach Chuck Pagano, who has been forced to step away from his day-to-day duties as he undergoes medical treatment.

Pagano has endured one round of chemotherapy and, according to USA Today, Pagano's oncologist, Larry Cripe has announced his leukemia is in remission. Although it's not a clean bill of health, it's a good sign for Pagano, who delivered a heartwarming locker room speech last week after his Colts improved to 5-3. The Colts are 100% percent behind their head coach (they've adopted the motto "Chuckstrong"), and shaved their heads in support before Thursday's game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. If you're still looking for a team to root for this NFL season, there's no better option than the Indianapolis Colts.

A lot of Smith's Twitter followers took this as a shot at Michael Vick, who at one time bankrolled a dogfighting operation. So a few minutes later, Smith posted this Instagram.

Kobe Bryant Wants To Kill Mike Brown

$

Kobe Bryant is tired of this motherf***ing Mike Brown calling these motherf***ing plays.

Image by Don Ryan / AP

Last week, I wrote an article on this very site defending Lakers head coach Mike Brown. I said that people calling for Brown's job are getting way ahead of themselves. I said that it's too early to read anything into the Lakers struggles this year. I said that people needed to allow this team time to jell. And even after last night's loss to the Utah Jazz, I stand by that. These guys just need time. But it looks like one of my pieces of evidence in Brown's favor might not be true anymore.

Hell, even Kobe "I not only love throwing people under the bus, I will literally drive a bus while I do it to really make my point clear" Bryant came out and defended Brown.

Said Bryant: "For Mike it might be a little tough to say that so I'll say it for him: 'Everybody shut up. Let us work. At the end of the day, you'll be happy with the result as you normally are.'"

If Kobe's willing to give not only the benefit of the doubt, but pretty full-throated support to a guy that was pretty clearly his second choice for the job, shouldn't Lakers fans and the talking heads on NBA broadcasts be willing to do the same?

Turns out Brown may be running out of time with Bryant. In the closing moments of last night's game, Bryant's eyes told the story.

Rod Stewart Cried After Celtic Beat Barcelona In The Champions League

Which is nice, because I'm sure all of Scotland has cried listening to “Maggie May.”

Image by Stu Forster / Getty Images

To describe the difference between Barcelona and Celtic, you have to think in terms of an order of magnitude. Barcelona is, by all accounts, the best team in the world, and can afford to pay the highest player wages in world soccer, according to Forbes. No player at Celtic earns more than £1.5m a year, while the average wage at Barcelona is £100,000 per week. Barcelona has won three European Cups in the last decade, Celtic hasn't won a trophy outside of Scotland since the 1960s. But last night, at Celtic Park in Glasgow, the Hoops beat Barcelona 2-1 in one of the most shocking upsets in recent memory.

Rod Stewart, a die-hard Celtic fan, shed a few tears in the stands after the final whistle.

Eight-Year-Old Girl Muay Thai Boxers In Thailand Are A Thing

$

This is terrifying for so many reasons.

DID YOU KNOW THAT THERE ARE UNDERGROUND CHILDREN MUAY THAI BOXING CIRCUITS IN THAILAND?! WHAT THE HELL?!

OK, sorry for screaming, but this is insane. A new documentary called Buffalo Girls goes inside the world of child blood sport by following two 8-year-old girls who compete in Muay Thai matches as a way of earning money for their families. This underground circuit apparently has upwards of 30,000 participants, many of whom (OBVIOUSLY!) endure serious injuries. Now Thailand is a poor country, and these families are struggling for money, but some things seem to cross the line of "Oh, it's just a different culture" acceptability. Adults surrounding a ring, waving money as two children beat the shit out of each other is DEFINITELY one of those things.

This is Stam, one of the two 8-year-olds the movie follows.

Her arrest came shortly after she was released from the hospital. She didn't have a ride, and she began walking away from the hospital without shoes on. Seeing this, security called the police. When they caught up with her, George was having trouble keeping her balance, and her eyes appeared both bloodshot and watery. She also denied having been in the hospital (despite the fact that she was still wearing a hospital bracelet) and gave them a fake name. She then resisted arrest.

The Knicks didn't have a game last night or tonight, so this is the perfect time for Carmelo to get out and do some good in his city. (For perspective, the Knicks opened their season last Friday and then played Sunday and in Philadelphia on Monday, so Melo hasn't had a ton of free time lately.)

Also, it looks like Melo's having a much more positive storm-related experience than his injured teammate, Amar'e Stoudamire.
