Here Are The Four NFL Coaches Who Got Fired On "Black Monday"

$

The day after the last game of the NFL regular season has certainly earned its nickname.

The NFL regular season concluded Sunday with 12 teams advancing to the playoffs and 20 teams beginning their offseason. The day after the regular season ends is known as "Black Monday," due to the usual mass firing of head coaches who have not proven themselves worthy of the role, the glory, and/or the money. This year's exodus offered no surprises; these personnel changes were all obvious by Thanksgiving. Here are the four coaches who will start the 2015 season in a new job, and one who will hang on to his position for at least one more year.

Rex Ryan — New York Jets

Rex Ryan — New York Jets

The Jets announced early Monday morning that head coach Rex Ryan had been fired after six seasons with the team. General Manager John Idzik was fired as well. The Jets appear to be clearing house in hopes of shaking up a storied franchise that has largely become a joke around the league.

The Jets went 4–12 this season, with only one of those wins against a team with a winning record (the Steelers). Under Rex Ryan, the Jets went 46–50 with playoff appearances his first two years.

Rex Ryan is one of the more appealing NFL coaches available to other teams. He has a long history of various positions of defensive coaching. The Jets, and their talent pool, hardly set up Ryan for success in New York.

The Jets will pick sixth in the 2015 NFL Draft.

Marc Trestman — Chicago Bears

Marc Trestman — Chicago Bears

After just two seasons with the Bears, head coach Marc Trestman has been fired. He did not post a winning season (8–8; 5–11) and the team missed the playoffs both years. The Bears lost their last five games of the season, with the back-to-back wins coming against the Vikings and the Buccaneers. Like the Jets, all of the Bears' wins came against sub-0.500 teams.

General Manager Phil Emery was also fired today.

Along with a coach and front office change, the Bears will have to decide how to get their team to playoff contention behind quarterback Jay Cutler, who signed an enormous seven-year contract earlier this season.

Mike Dinovo/Usa Today Sports

Mike Smith — Atlanta Falcons

Mike Smith — Atlanta Falcons

As expected, the Falcons fired Mike Smith today after seven seasons with the team. Under his tenure, Falcons teams went 66–46 with four playoff appearances. In 2012, the Falcons went 13–3 and lost to the 49ers in the NFC Championship. They went 4–12 the next season, and 6–10 this season, though that was nearly good enough for a playoff appearance thanks to the ultra-weak NFC South.

Atlanta will pick eighth in the 2015 NFL draft. Quarterback Matt Ryan had a fair season that was consistent with his previous six seasons. The Falcons have an immensely talented roster, and it's obvious that a coaching change could quickly bring them back to success.

Baltimore Police issued a summons for Sanders to appear in court in February to face one charge of sexual conduct without consent. The incident for which Sanders is being charged allegedly occurred on Dec. 14, 2014, according to the police record.

The charge is punishable by a maximum of a year in jail or a fine of $1,000, or both, according to the state's penal code.

Sanders' summons, first reported by the Baltimore Sun, comes just as the Ray Rice saga with the NFL and the Ravens sunsets. The Ravens cut Rice after TMZ released surveillance video of him beating his then-fianceé Janay Palmer in an elevator.

Sanders was in charge of the Ravens' investigation into the incident, which took months to complete.

Rice and Palmer have since married.

The Ravens will play against the Steelers in the first round of the NFL playoffs on Saturday.

St. Louis Rams Owner Plans To Build A Stadium In Los Angeles

Team owner Stan Kroenke made a major step toward relocating the Rams.

Dilip Vishwanat / Getty Images

The Los Angeles Times reports St. Louis Rams owner Stan Kroenke has bought enough space in Los Angeles to house a new NFL stadium and parking. According to the Times, the proposed stadium would hold 80,000 fans.

The NFL will not allow any team to relocate in the next season, but the league has made it clear they intend to have a team in Los Angeles in the near future. The Oakland Raiders have also been rumored to be looking to move to Los Angeles. Both the Rams and the Raiders played in Los Angeles previously. To gain approval of the move, 24 of 32 team owners would have to be in support.

According to the report, the stadium would not be publicly funded, and will have to be approved by voters.

Though this initiative by Kroenke is a major step toward Los Angeles once again becoming home to an NFL team, owners have frequently used the threat of relocation to L.A. to gain leverage with their current host cities.

The Rams have played at Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis since 1995. Fan attendance ranked second to last in the NFL this season.

Developer Anschutz Entertainment Group didn't return a request for comment.

Ramon Antonio Vargas of The Advocate reported that the KPD confirmed Galette was charged after he pushed a woman who would not leave his home. From there, the KPD say, their stories diverge: The victim claims she is Galette's ex-girlfriend and current personal assistant; Galette says she is a dancer. KPD confirmed the "woman had visible injuries" and was bleeding. Galette's cousin, Terrance Banks, was also present at the time of the incident.

There was further outrage when Professional Footballers’ Association Chief Executive Gordon Taylor brought up the Hillsborough tragedy in conjunction with the Evans case.

If we're talking about things in football we know what happened, what was alleged to have happened at Hillsborough and it's now unravelling and we're finding it was very different to how it was portrayed at the time, indeed by the police at the time.

NFL Investigation Into Ray Rice Incident Finds Officials Did Not See Elevator Video Before Public

Former FBI Director Robert Mueller’s report was released on Thursday.

On Thursday, former FBI Director Robert Mueller released a report detailing his investigation into NFL's handling of the Ray Rice scandal.

On Thursday, former FBI Director Robert Mueller released a report detailing his investigation into NFL's handling of the Ray Rice scandal.

Commissioner of the National Football League Roger Goodell

Jason DeCrow / AP Photo

The investigation was largely to determine if the NFL had in fact seen the full surveillance video of Ray Rice assaulting then-fianceé Janay Palmer in an elevator in Atlantic City, New Jersey, last February. The full video was released by TMZ.

Mueller said his investigation determined that the NFL had not in fact seen the video before it was released by TMZ.

In September, the Associated Press reported that an executive at the NFL received a copy of the full video months prior to the release by TMZ. The Mueller Report found this to be unsubstantiated. This conclusion was determined through hundreds of interviews, review of documents and computer files, checking telephone logs, and an investigation into mailroom logs. There was also an anonymous tip line set up for employees, but no calls were received.

Later in the report, it is said that the Associated Press's anonymous source used a burner phone to place the call, and that the AP was unhelpful in providing information that would allow the investigation on that to proceed.

Our investigation identified a number of investigative steps that the League did not take to acquire additional information about what occurred inside the elevator. League investigators did not contact any of the police officers who investigated the incident, the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office, or the Revel to attempt to obtain or view the in-elevator video or to obtain other information. No one from the League asked Rice or his lawyer whether they would make available for viewing the in-elevator video they received as part of criminal discovery in early April. And, after the initial contacts with the Ravens in the immediate aftermath of the incident, League investigators did not follow up with the Ravens to determine whether the team had additional information.
