Kevin Durant's New Sneakers Pay Floral, Pastel Tribute To His Late Aunt

How can you not root for this guy?

Oklahoma City forward Kevin Durant has been absolutely annihilating the NBA recently; in his 16 January games he averaged an absurd 35.9 points per game on 54.9% shooting from the field, and he's taken command of the MVP race. He is a bad, scary man.

But KD isn't all vicious dunks and laser-guided jump shots: He has a sensitive side, too. This is his new signature Nike shoe, the KD VI Aunt Pearl. It pays tribute to his late aunt, who passed away from lung cancer in 2000.

Last night’s blowout bout between the Seattle Seahawks and the Denver Broncos drew 111.5 million people.

Despite being a lopsided snoozer of a game, Super Bowl XLVIII ended up setting a ratings record. The Neilsen Company today announced that 111.5 million people watched the Denver Broncos get trounced by the Seattle Seahawks.

The record-setting figure bests last year's 108.6 million viewers, making Sunday night's game the most-watched event in U.S. history.

It's the fourth time in five years that the Super Bowl has set a ratings record. On top of the 111.5 million viewers for the telecast, Fox estimates that 2.3 million people watched a live stream of the game online.

Meet The Sochi-Bound Olympians Who Have Spoken Out Against Russia’s Anti-LGBT Laws

If any athletes are going to make headlines for speaking out against Putin’s anti-LGBT legislation, these are the Olympians you should be watching.

Australian Snowboarder, Belle Brockhoff

Australian Snowboarder, Belle Brockhoff

The 20-year-old Aussie came out of the closet in August as a display of solidarity with gay and lesbian athletes. After qualifying to compete in snowboard cross, she has made her feelings toward Russian President Vladimir Putin and his country’s anti-gay laws very clear, promising to "rip on his ass" during interviews. "I'm not happy and there's a bunch of other Olympians who are not happy either," she said.

During the games she also plans on making small displays of support. "The most I'll do is hold up six fingers to represent Principle Six. Possibly I'll do it on camera here or there, and maybe after the heats of my event." The Principle Six campaign, named after the clause in the Olympic charter that guarantees non-discrimination, was formed by two nonprofits: Athlete Ally and All Out. Brockhoff and the other athletes that have joined the campaign are pushing Russia to repeal its controversial anti-LGBT legislation.

Lineman Accused Of Bullying Is Reinstated, Tweets Positively About The Teammate He Allegedly Bullied

Another twist in the Richie Incognito-Jonathan Martin story.

Doug Benz / Reuters

Miami Dolphins lineman Richie Incognito's team-imposed suspension for allegedly bullying and harassing teammate Jonathan Martin came to an end Tuesday.

Incognito marked the conclusion of the suspension, which started Nov. 3, with a series of celebratory tweets to his 62,000 followers that included well-wishes for Martin.

Incognito's suspension was ended days after the Super Bowl as part of an administrative move agreed upon by all involved parties.

However, the move probably doesn't matter much in terms of his future with the Dolphins. Team owner Stephen Ross said last week that he doesn't think Incognito or Martin will return to the team next season. Incognito will become an unrestricted free agent in March, while Martin remains under contract and could be traded or released.

The Dolphins, Incognito and Martin are still waiting on results from an investigation by Ted Wells, who was appointed by the NFL to look into the matter.

Martin spoke to NBC Sports last week, saying he felt his treatment by Incognito went beyond "normal rookie hazing." Incognito's lawyer released a statement about a day after the Martin interview claiming Martin was an equal participant.

Yesterday The Big Lead published the full transcript of more than 1,000 text messages Incognito and Martin swapped between October 2012 and November 2013. "The messages are what you'd expect from wealthy, young athletes: Incessant talk about partying, drinking, and chasing women. And there is plenty of bawdy back-and-forth banter that at times reads like a fraternity brother hazing a pledge," the site writes.

Will The Sochi Games Be Safe For LGBT Visitors And Advocates?

$

LGBT and human rights advocates remain uncertain about what to expect in Russia under the international spotlight of the Olympics. Several organizations, along with the U.S. State Department, warn LGBT visitors to exercise caution.

Leading advocates remain concerned over how Russian authorities will enforce the country's anti-LGBT propaganda law when it comes to LGBT visitors to the Sochi Winter Olympics — and what the broader atmosphere for those visitors will be.

Worry over the law itself is not new, but conflicting responses from the International Olympic Committee and Russian officials regarding the law's enforcement during the Olympics have put advocates on high alert ahead of the opening ceremonies Feb. 7 — especially for those advocates who will be on the ground in Sochi.

"It's hard to imagine something not happening given all that has transpired to date," said Hudson Taylor, executive director of Athlete Ally, who arrived in Russia on Tuesday. "Clearly there is risk involved with being here but given the enormous opportunity to raise awareness about what's going on in Russia, the risk has to be weighed against the reward."

In the half-year since the law was approved by Russian President Vladimir Putin, the LGBT community there has faced an "unchecked" increase in violence and discrimination and at least a handful of people have been prosecuted for violating the law, according to LGBT advocates at the Human Rights Campaign.

As Tanya Cooper, a Russia researcher at Human Rights Watch, said in a statement, "By turning a blind eye to hateful homophobic rhetoric and violence, Russian authorities are sending a dangerous message as the world is about to arrive on its doorstep for the Olympics that there is nothing wrong with attacks on gay people."

In an interview last month, Putin said, "There are no fears for people with this nontraditional orientation who plan to come to Sochi as guests or participants." But, he also has continued to conflate homosexuality and pedophilia, saying to gay people, "You can feel relaxed and calm [in Sochi], but leave children alone, please."

Shawn Gaylord, advocacy counsel at Human Rights First, is currently traveling to Sochi with a small team and said they are "very concerned" by the propaganda law and any potential confrontation at the games.

"A lot of this is guessing," Gaylord told BuzzFeed. "We will learn more when we get there on the ground — what it feels like in terms of safety. A lot of Russians we are talking to think that there won't be much incidents in terms of the Russian propaganda law because they want the Olympics to go smoothly. I think there's not going to be a big appetite for enforcing the anti-LGBT propaganda law."

Advocates agree that with Sochi under the spotlight of the Olympics and the microscope of critics across the globe, the Russian government could very well choose to avoid incidents involving the anti-LGBT law and relax its enforcement. Foreigners who violate the law, though, could be detained for up to 15 days before being deported from Russia.

"There are a lot of more questions than answers with Sochi in general," said Andre Banks, co-founder and executive director of All Out. "I think on one hand, the Russian government has been intentionally vague on how they are going to deal with any kind of political discussion related to LGBT issues. On the other hand, they have an incentive for it to go well and it's hard to see them policing Olympians at the Olympics."

Many are concerned, though, that if the games transpire without incident, the world's attention will stray from the discriminatory policies and violence perpetrated against Russia's LGBT community.

"If I had to venture a guess, I'd say that with the world's eyes looking at Sochi, they are going to be more hesitant to crack down on LGBT people," said Michael Cole-Schwartz, director of communications at HRC. "I think the real danger is that Russia puts on a good show for the next couple of weeks and then LGBT people who remain in Russia will still be at great peril and the world will not have had the opportunity to see what that reality is like."

And with the opening ceremonies in Sochi this Friday, critics of the anti-LGBT climate in Russia, such as the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice and Human Rights, are looking beyond the anti-LGBT laws and taking aim at the effects of those policies on public life for LGBT people in Russia.

"With President Putin's stamp of approval, Russia has effectively endorsed homophobia and incited an onslaught of violence against LGBTI people. The culture of impunity that protects the perpetrators of these hate crimes is disgraceful and unacceptable," said Kerry Kennedy, president of the RFK Center, in a statement.

A series of news reports on Channel 4 in the U.K. are looking at the violence and discrimination experienced by Russian LGBT people at the hands of anti-gay gangs and the government.

"As Russia hosts the Olympics in this atmosphere of homophobic hatred, the government needs to take urgent measures to support the rights of LGBT people and protect them," Human Rights Watch's Cooper said.

In January, the U.S. State Department issued a travel warning for Americans planning to attend the Olympics, saying, "The law makes it a crime to promote LGBT equality in public, but lacks concrete legal definitions for key terms. Russian authorities have indicated a broad interpretation of what constitutes 'LGBT propaganda,' and provided vague guidance as to which actions will be interpreted by authorities as 'LGBT propaganda.'"

Cole-Schwartz told BuzzFeed that the State Department's warnings have made travelers more aware of the risks involved with traveling to Russia for the games, adding that it's unlikely that LGBT Americans are unaware of the problems related to the law. However, HRC would neither recommend LGBT Americans go to the games or stay home.

"I don't think that we would have a position on that one way or another," Cole-Schwartz said. "[People] have to make good choices for themselves. If someone wants to go and show solidarity with LGBT Russians and take a stand, they should be aware that carries risks."

On Tuesday, top advisors assured President Obama that the U.S. is taking appropriate steps to ensure the safety of American citizens in Russia during a briefing on American efforts to support Russian security measures at the games, according to a White House spokesperson.

A request for additional comments from the State Department about LGBT safety at the games was not returned.

The Jamaican Bobsled Team Arrives In Sochi Without Equipment

It’s just like the movie! Sort of.

Robert Laberge / Getty

When Jamaica's two-man bobsled team officially qualified for the Olympics in late January, driver Winston Watts informed the media that he wasn't sure whether the team could make the trip to Sochi due to a lack in funding. However, after several successful online campaigns were organized by fans, enough money was raised to cover the necessary training and equipment costs, in addition to the travel fees, which were eventually paid for by the Jamaican Olympic Association.

Now the men of the Jamaican bobsled team have another problem: Their equipment is missing. According to Watts, all of their luggage, including runners (blades), shoes, and other gear, did not arrive in Sochi, possibly due to bad weather forcing them to miss their flight to Moscow. Without such equipment, the Jamaicans were unable to participate in training today.

Despite another setback, which Watts describes as "really frustrating," he remains optimistic and said that "a lot of guys wanted to help us, and we may race on borrowed blades."

If that scenario sounds familiar, it's because that's exactly what happened when Jamaica made its Winter Olympic debut in 1988 when the team had to borrow spare sleds from other countries to compete. The country's first run inspired the 1993 movie Cool Runnings, which was loosely based on that team.

"I still watch that movie as if it's the first I'm watching it," Watts said. "It's very inspiring."

Olympic Sponsors Back Olympic Committee In Sochi

$

While the 10 top sponsors of the Olympics invested heavily in Sochi’s success — and in their multi-year partnership with the International Olympic Committee — they have remained largely silent on LGBT and other human rights concerns in Russia.

BuzzFeed/John Gara

WASHINGTON — With the Winter Olympics opening ceremony in Sochi just days away, the top Olympic sponsors have largely stayed on the sidelines of the disputes over Russia's anti-LGBT laws and other human rights issues.

The sponsors have nearly universally backed the International Olympic Committee, whose president, Thomas Bach, this week accused politicians not attending the games of using the Sochi games to make a political statement "on the backs of the athletes."

The IOC's sponsorship program — called The Olympic Partners, or TOP — likely is part of the reason the sponsors all have backed the IOC, as the program "operates on a four-year term – the Olympic quadrennium," which means the sponsors also will be working with the IOC for the larger, upcoming Rio Summer Olympics in 2016.

The Sochi and Rio games are big business for the 10 TOP sponsors — in terms of brand recognition, marketing rights, and sales connected with the Olympics — and some sponsors, including Coca-Cola and Omega, already are contracted with the IOC through the 2020 games.

As Visa announced plainly on its site, "Sponsoring the Olympic Games makes good business sense for Visa and our clients."

The other seven TOP sponsors are: Atos, Dow, GE, McDonald's, Panasonic, Procter & Gamble, and Samsung.

When BuzzFeed sought information from the TOP sponsors in August 2013 about their view of Russia's then-new anti-LGBT propaganda law, several provided BuzzFeed with identical language backing the IOC's position that it has received assurances from the Russian government that the games will not be affected by the law. Notably, a GE spokeswoman was an exception, going further than the others and telling BuzzFeed, "We expect the IOC to uphold human rights in every aspect of the Games."

Two weeks after BuzzFeed published its story, the Human Rights Campaign sent a letter to the TOP sponsors, asking them to speak out against Russia's new law and asking them to ask the IOC to take action as well. Nothing happened.

After that first story, the TOP sponsors, generally, have either not responded to BuzzFeed's requests or not responded with any substantively different statements.

This past Friday, HRC was joined by Human Rights Watch, All Out, and 37 other groups in a letter sent to all the TOP sponsors seeking action. They asked the companies' CEOs to "use your voice to insist on changes that will make a difference in the future." The letter asks the companies to "condemn Russia's anti-LGBT law," use their advertising during the Olympics "to promote equality during the weeks leading up to and during the Games themselves," "ask the IOC to create a body to monitor serious Olympics-related human rights abuses in host countries as they occur," and asks the IOC to ensure that future host countries "honor their commitments to upholding the Olympic Charter, including Principle 6 which forbids discrimination of any kind."

The 40 groups — which included U.S., Russian, and global groups — concluded, "Discrimination has no place in the Olympics, and LGBT people must not be targeted with violence or deprived of their ability to advocate for their own equality. We cannot be silent on how Russia's anti-LGBT law violates this very standard to which we aspire. As all eyes turn toward Sochi, we ask you to stand with us."

Thousands Of Stray Dogs Are Being Killed Ahead Of The Sochi Olympics

$

The city of Sochi has hired a private company to round up as many dogs (“biological trash”) as possible before the opening ceremony.

AP Photo/The Canadian Press, Nathan Denette

A private company hired by the city of Sochi has quietly been capturing and killing as many stray dogs as possible to clean up the streets before the start of the Winter Olympics.

Animal rights activists estimate that anywhere from 5,000 to 7,000 dogs have been killed since the current round-up began, a number that city officials would neither confirm nor deny.

Strays are a common sight in Russia and traditionally have been a welcome part of city culture in many metropolitan areas (for example, when a popular Moscow street dog was stabbed to death in 2001, horrified residents raised money to build a memorial statue of the stray).

Many of the dogs kept as pets by Russian men and women were rescued from the streets, either by individuals or by animal shelters.

According to a contract obtained by the Boston Globe, Sochi officials hired Basya Service to engage in the "catching and disposal" of dogs. The owner of the company, Alexei Sorokin, gave a candid interview to ABC News in which he described his work as a public service.

"These dogs are biological trash," Sorokin said. "Let's call things by their real name."

He said that strays presented a risk to the Olympics and public safety. "Imagine, if during an Olympic games, a ski jumper landed at 130 kilometers an hour [over 80 mph] and a dog runs into him when he lands. It would be deadly for both a jumper and for the stray dog," said Sorokin. "I am for the rights of people to walk the streets without fear of being attacked by packs of dogs... [they] must be taken off the streets even if that means putting them to sleep."

Although Sorokin told ABC News that his company uses poisons and traps to kill the stray dogs, activists claim that much harsher methods are being deployed.

David Beckham Purchases Miami MLS Soccer Team For $25 Million

$

The Ex-Manchester United, England, and L.A. Galaxy captain signs on for another warm-weather Major League Soccer experience.

Major League Soccer announced Wednesday morning that retired Los Angeles Galaxy star David Beckham would exercise a contract clause and purchase the rights to a future Miami club for $25 million.

Miami was already home to an MLS team in the early stages of the league, but the Fusion folded due to revenue concerns in 2001. Beckham believes it will be different this time, though.

"I wanted to create a team that we could start from scratch," he said. "I know this city is ready for football — soccer — this time around."

Patrick Farrell/Miami Herald / MCT

Beckham says he'd like to bring global stars to Miami in the same way the city's basketball team has done. "We have a list," he said. "We want to bring some of the best players in football to Miami to play on this team. I've seen what happens to teams when you bring great players in. I'm talking about the Heat."

The MLS, ranked as the seventh-best soccer league in the world in a recent survey currently consists of 19 teams, which average around 18,600 fans per game. Expansion clubs New York City F.C. and Orlando City S.C. are scheduled to join in 2015. The Miami team's start date won't be finalized until they finish deciding where to build a new stadium; discussions with the city are underway.
