The driver has been in a medically-induced coma since a ski accident in the French Alps yesterday morning.

Michaela Rehle / Reuters

Seven-time F-1 racing champion Michael Schumacher, who retired for the second time last year, was skiing with his son in the French Alpine resort town of Meribel when he fell and hit his head on a rock. Schumacher had been wearing a helmet, but it did not sufficiently protect him.

"Someone who had suffered this accident without a helmet would not have made it this far," said Dr. Jean-Francois Payen, chief anesthesiologist at Grenoble University Hospital Center in France.

The 44-year-old German driver immediately underwent surgery for a brain hemorrhage after arriving at Grenoble already in a coma.

Schumacher, who lives in Switzerland, is being kept company by his wife, Corinna Betsh, and two children, Gina-Maria and Mick.

Doctors say they are taking his injury "hour by hour" and refused to predict the outcome, NBC News reports.

"We cannot predict the future for Michael Schumacher," said Payen. "It's too soon to talk about."

Here's The Epic Johnny Football Comeback You Missed While You Were Partying

Johnny Manziel was in fine, hyperactive form on New Year’s Eve.

Daniel Shirey / USA Today

Texas A&M opened the second half of the Chik-Fil-A Bowl down 38-17 to Duke on Tuesday night. But, to quote what is likely Johnny Manziel's favorite movie, was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Mr. Football got his own comeback started in the third quarter with this insane play, leaping over a defender, bouncing off his own lineman...

And escaping the pocket to toss the ball to Travis Labhart for an easy touchdown.

A&M would soon narrow the deficit to seven on a Tra Carson run. Duke then closed the third quarter with a field goal. Soon after the last period began, a perfect back-shoulder throw to Mike Evans set the Aggies up in the red zone.

Out U.S. Olympic Delegate Caitlin Cahow Says Sochi Games Should Be About "Transcending Differences"

In a column published Thursday in USA Today, out lesbian Olympic medalist Caitlin Cahow called for the celebration of diversity at the upcoming Sochi Winter Olympics in Russia amid the nation's anti-LGBT policies.

Cahow, a silver and bronze medalist in women's ice hockey, will travel to the games next month in a delegation some see as a political statement in opposition of the laws due to highly visible out gay delegates and the absence of high-ranking U.S. officials. Janet Napolitano, a former federal official, will lead the delegation, which will also include out lesbian tennis champion Billie Jean King and out gay Olympic figure skater Brian Boitano.

In her article, Cahow said she was chosen for the delegation with the understanding that it will illustrate and emphasize the diversity of the U.S. on the global stage — echoing a similar sentiment shared by President Obama, who said the delegation "speaks for itself." Ultimately, her inclusion in the delegation means more than representing the LGBT community, she said.

"Despite the selective focus of some, I am not going to Russia to represent but one community," Cahow wrote. "Our delegation carries a message and a symbolism, which both includes and extends beyond the LGBT issues highlighted in the headlines."

Minnesota Vikings Deny That Chris Kluwe's LGBT Advocacy Ended His Career

Update: Vikings special teams coach denies Kluwe’s claims; Minnesota legislator calls for investigation. “All we can do is try to expose their behavior when we see it and call them to account for their actions,” Chris Kluwe says in a post on Deadspin .

Former NFL punter Chris Kluwe has accused the Minnesota Vikings of releasing him in May because of his advocacy for LGBT rights, and accused at least one assistant coach of making a number of bigoted comments.

In a post published on Deadspin today, Kluwe wrote, "I honestly don't know if my activism was the reason I got fired. However, I'm pretty confident it was."

Kluwe details a damning chain of events that led to his eventual release, starting in the summer of 2012 when he was approached for assistance by a Minnesota-based group called Minnesotans for Marriage Equality. He said a day after Deadspin published a letter he'd written to Maryland delegate Emmett C. Burns Jr. "chastising him for trampling the free-speech rights of Baltimore Ravens linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo," then-Vikings head coach Leslie Frazier called him in for a meeting to discourage him from speaking out about his support for same-sex marriage rights.

Kluwe also said Vikings special teams coordinator Mike Priefer started using homophobic language in his presence and singled him out for verbal abuse despite little change in his on-field performance. Kluwe alleges Priefer, in a meeting with players, said, "We should round up all the gays, send them to an island, and then nuke it until it glows."

In a press release this afternoon, the Vikings vigorously denied Kluwe was cut because of his work with LGBT rights groups.

"Because he was identified with the Vikings, Chris was asked to be respectful while expressing his opinions. Team ownership and management also repeatedly emphasized to Chris that the Vikings would not impinge on his right to express his views," the Vikings said in the release. "Any notion that Chris was released from our football team due to his stance on marriage equality is entirely inaccurate and inconsistent with team policy. Chris was released strictly based on his football performance."

Frazier, who was fired by the Vikings last week after going 20-31 in little more than three seasons as head coach, wasn't immediately available for comment.

Former Baltimore linebacker and special teams star Brendon Ayabadejo, who is also a prominent advocate for LGBT rights, quickly rallied to Kluwe's defense on Twitter:

Down Goes Alabama! Oklahoma Slays College Football's Dragon

An unbelievable performance by instantly legendary freshman Trevor Knight highlights the most decisive victory over Nick Saban’s Crimson Tide team in more than three years.

Stacy Revere / Getty

When last night's Sugar Bowl began, two-time defending national champ Alabama had lost three games in the last three seasons by a combined total of 14 points. They were a 17-point favorite over Oklahoma, and some college football writers and fans were saying they'd end the year as the best team in the country even though they'd failed to qualify for the BCS title game after a fairly fluky loss to Auburn.

But no one's saying that anymore. Oklahoma laid a beating on Bama the likes of which it hadn't seen in years, rolling the Tide's defense for five touchdowns and battering its offense for seven sacks in a 45-31 victory. Oklahoma freshman quarterback Trevor Knight (playing in only his eighth game) and receivers Lacoltan Bester, Jalen Saunders, and Sterling Shepard (among others) were incredible, attacking Alabama's fearsome secondary with a speed and precision that bordered on the ridiculous.

The Sooner receivers made the Crimson Tide's four- and five-star athletes look flat-footed, while young Knight dropped them deep, pinpoint touch passes reminiscent of Peyton Manning and the Broncos.

When you hit a guy in the back of the end zone throwing 25-plus yards back across your body on a broken play, it's your night.

Chris Kluwe's Former Teammate Defends Minnesota Vikings Coach, Organization

“They have promoted a workplace environment that was conducive for success. At no time did I ever feel suppressed or that I could not be myself.”

Hannah Foslien / Getty Images

One of Chris Kluwe's former teammates has come out in support of the Minnesota Vikings' front office and coaching staff after Kluwe accused them of releasing him because of his advocacy for LGBT issues.

"Contrary to Chris' statements, they have promoted a workplace environment that was conducive for success," Vikings placekicker Blair Walsh said in a written statement. "At no time did I ever feel suppressed or that I could not be myself."

In a post on Deadspin yesterday, Kluwe laid out a chain of events that he claims led to his eventual release, starting in the summer of 2012 when he was approached for assistance by a Minnesota-based group called Minnesotans for Marriage Equality.

Walsh, who was a teammate with Kluwe for only one season — 2012, defended Priefer but didn't explicitly refute Kluwe's specific claims.

"I have had countless conversations and interactions with Coach Priefer, and I personally can attest to his integrity and character," Walsh said. "His professionalism in the workplace is exemplary, and I firmly believe that my teammates would whole-heartedly agree. The allegations made today are reprehensible and totally not compatible with what Mike Priefer stands for."

The Vikings declined to make long snapper Cullen Loeffler, who once teamed with Kluwe and former kicker Ryan Longwell to make one of the longest-serving special teams trios in the league, available for comment.

Longwell, who was the Vikings' kicker until 2011, also wasn't immediately available for comment. But a couple of days ago on Twitter, Longwell spoke up on behalf of Frazier, who was fired last week as the Vikings' head coach after little more than three seasons.
