Riding The Tallest Bike In The World

It's 14.5 feet tall.

Richie Trimble went on a 15 mile ride across Los Angeles on a 14.5 foot bike he built himself. Watching through it, I wondered what would happen if he had to stop and didn't have anything to hang on to. Luckily he had the support of fellow bikers and a couple of traffic officers that stopped cars along the way.

Well, the West did. The Heat are still going to win.

Well, this is huge:

That's right: presumptive West favorites the Oklahoma City Thunder lose their second-best player and All-Star to a meniscus tear. As Young later points out, Metta World Peace once returned from meniscus surgery in 13 days, but usually, it takes 6-8 weeks; in that case, Westbrook would likely miss the remainder of the playoffs.

A Player Who Almost Died Six Months Ago Is Going To The NFL

Not all NFL Draft stories are created equal.

Via: AP

In the first round of the 2013 NFL Draft, the Oakland Raiders selected D.J. Hayden, a cornerback out of the University of Houston, with the 12th overall pick. Executives say they would've picked him 3rd overall if they had remained at their original draft spot, but they traded down because they knew their guy would still be around.

Now, it's remarkable any time you get picked in the first round of a professional sports league's draft. It's even more remarkable if six months before the night of that draft, you almost died.

At a team practice on November 6, Hayden took one of his teammate's knees to the chest during routine drills.

Via: youtube.com

Here's how he described what happened next during his Pro Day:

"When I was breathing, I just wasn't breathing right. [The doctor] took me inside. He was asking me these questions and I was getting real cold.

I'm looking around and I'm getting real sleepy. My left eye goes pitch black. I can't see out of it. I can see a little bit out of my left eye. I'm praying, 'Lord, help me get out of this one.'

They rushed me to the hospital and did a scan on my stomach and my chest. They saw a lot of blood in my abdomen. They thought it was my liver or my spleen.

The doctor said he was going to have to cut me open. I said, 'Okay, just don't mess my abs up.' So they cut through my sternum and saw the [inferior vena cava], the main vein to your heart, was torn. He put some sutures, in stitched it back together, closed me back up, and here I am today."

Specifically in Buffalo.

Last night, the Buffalo Bills drafted E.J. Manuel with the 16th pick in the NFL Draft, making him the only quarterback taken in the first round. It was the most surprising move in an otherwise forgettable first night.

Source: @SportsCenter

Most analysts consider Manuel a project, but he certainly has the size and talent to be successful in the NFL. However in a recent conversation with NFL officials Manuel revealed he may need more grooming then we initially thought.

Collins also wrote that the March arguments in the Supreme Court over same-sex marriage drove him to publicize his sexuality. "Less than three miles from my apartment, nine jurists argued about my happiness and my future," he wrote. "Here was my chance to be heard and I couldn't say a thing. I didn't want to answer questions and draw attention to myself. Not while I was still playing."

Collins also wrote that his grandmother was nervous about his coming out publicly because of the prejudice and hatred it might draw, but that he didn't want to live in fear of his sexuality being revealed. "The announcement should be mine to make, not TMZ's."

Collins is on Twitter at @jasoncollins34. His most recent tweet was a retweet of his brother Jarron:

How A Kennedy Helped The NBA's Jason Collins Come Out

Jason Collins and now-Rep. Joe Kennedy III were roommates at Stanford.

Jason Collins and Rep. Joe Kennedy

Via: facebook.com

WASHINGTON — With Monday's announcement by the NBA's Jason Collins that he is gay, the sports world exploded. On the sidelines was the important part that politics — or at least one politician — played in the decision.

From his piece in Sports Illustrated:

I realized I needed to go public when Joe Kennedy, my old roommate at Stanford and now a Massachusetts congressman, told me he had just marched in Boston's 2012 Gay Pride Parade. I'm seldom jealous of others, but hearing what Joe had done filled me with envy. I was proud of him for participating but angry that as a closeted gay man I couldn't even cheer my straight friend on as a spectator. If I'd been questioned, I would have concocted half truths. What a shame to have to lie at a celebration of pride. I want to do the right thing and not hide anymore. I want to march for tolerance, acceptance and understanding. I want to take a stand and say, "Me, too."

The recent Boston Marathon bombing reinforced the notion that I shouldn't wait for the circumstances of my coming out to be perfect. Things can change in an instant, so why not live truthfully? When I told Joe a few weeks ago that I was gay, he was grateful that I trusted him. He asked me to join him in 2013. We'll be marching on June 8.

Following Monday's report, Kennedy said in a statement, "For as long as I've known Jason Collins he has been defined by three things: his passion for the sport he loves, his unwavering integrity, and the biggest heart you will ever find. Without question or hesitation, he gives everything he's got to those of us lucky enough to be in his life. I'm proud to stand with him today and proud to call him a friend."

And, he tweeted:
