The six players will be the “first to suffer” if they break their contracts, says owner.

Six foreign players for Shakhtar Donetsk have refused to return to the eastern Ukrainian soccer team's conflict-hit home city, sparking a furious reaction from owner Rinat Akhmetov.

Six foreign players for Shakhtar Donetsk have refused to return to the eastern Ukrainian soccer team's conflict-hit home city, sparking a furious reaction from owner Rinat Akhmetov.

Brazilian stars Douglas Costa (pictured), Dentinho, Fred, Alex Teixiera and Ismaily, as well as Argentine forward Facundo Ferreyra, remained in France after the team played a friendly match against Olympique Lyon on Saturday.

Akhmetov warned the players that their actions could activate compensation clauses that would see them owe Shakhtar tens of millions of euros.

Akhmetov warned the players that their actions could activate compensation clauses that would see them owe Shakhtar tens of millions of euros.

Akhmetov said: "It is true, six have not come. I don't rule out that these players will return to the team quickly, and some of them tomorrow. Players have contracts that they have to abide by.

"If they do not come, I think, they will be the first to suffer. Each of them has a minimum release clause, which is tens of millions of euros. If someone wants to reduce this amount by a million, then such a decision is our right. There won’t be clearance sale!"

Alexander Khudoteply/AFP/File

Hopefully, the mind and heart will prevail over misunderstanding, and the players will not follow temptation and fear. Especially since there is nothing to fear. We are ready to provide security. We will not take risks and in any case we won't bring players to dangerous places.

We want to play in Donetsk very much, but, unfortunately, at the moment we cannot do it. We will play where we will be allowed to: we would like to do it in Kharkiv. The decision regarding the championship is taken by the Ukrainian Football Federation. Through our game, we will call for peace and try to bring joy to our fans.

The announcement of this "insufficient punishment" was met with massive backlash from media and fans, leading up to an examination of sexism in sports and an epic takedown of the NFL by Keith Olbermann during his Thursday night show, in which Olbermann states, "The message to the women who the league claims constitute 50 percent of its fan base is simple: The NFL wants your money. It will do nothing else for you. It will tolerate those who abuse you verbally and those who abuse you physically."

This is what is happening at ESPN right now. Stephen A. Smith offends on two different mediums.

While addressing the recent suspension of NFL running back Ray Rice, ESPN Commentator Stephen A. Smith made several off-putting comments about women provoking attackers.

We keep talking about the guys. We know you have no business putting your hands on a woman. I don't know how many times I got to reiterate that.

But as a man who was raised by women, see I know what I'm going to do if somebody touches a female member of my family. I know what I'm going to do, I know what my boys are going to do. I know what, I'm going to have to remind myself that I work for the Worldwide Leader, I'm going to have to get law enforcement officials involved because of what I'm going to be tempted to do.

But what I've tried to employ the female members of my family, some of who you all met and talked to and what have you, is that again, and this what, I've done this all my life, let's make sure we don't do anything to provoke wrong actions, because if I come, or somebody else come, whether it's law enforcement officials, your brother or the fellas that you know, if we come after somebody has put their hands on you, it doesn't negate the fact that they already put their hands on you.

Today Lampard sat down at NYCFC headquarters to take questions tweeted to the #AskLamps hashtag:

The only problem? Lampard's nickname also happens to be the name for the common household lighting appliance. Twitter is not letting this fact go unnoticed.

Judge says sale of team to ex-Microsoft CEO can move forward.

A California judge ruled Monday Shelly Sterling had the authority to negotiate the $2 billion sale of the Los Angeles Clippers to ex-Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer after her husband Donald Sterling was banned for life by the NBA.

Shelly Sterling had her husband declared mentally incapacitated in May before she agreed to sell the Clippers to Ballmer. Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Michael Levanas rejected Donald Sterling's claims that he was being defrauded by his wife and attorney. At one Donald Sterling point called Shelly Sterling a "pig" in the courtroom.

Donald Sterling is expected to appeal the ruling but the judge's order also provides for the sale of the Clippers to proceed despite potential appeals.

On Monday, lawyers for Shelly Sterling and Steve Ballmer told ESPN they expect the sale of the Clippers to go through by Aug. 15.

"We are pleased that the court has affirmed Shelly Sterling's right to sell the Los Angeles Clippers to Steve Ballmer," NBA Executive Vice President Mike Bass said in a statement following the ruling. "We look forward to the transaction closing as soon as possible."
