Dutch Coach Says U.S. Failed At Speedskating Because Of Football, A "Sport That Sucks"

CNBC spoke this week with Dutch speedskating coach Jillert Anema about his country's crazy-dominant performance at the Sochi games — 21 medals, six of them gold, with a 22nd already guaranteed in men's team pursuit. And Anema has a hot take on why the Dutch are performing so much better than the Americans, who've been disappointing from Shani Davis on down, in the sport.

"You have a lot of attention on a foolish sport like American football and you waste a lot of talent, athletic talent, on a sport that is meant to kill each other, to injure each other. ... You're so narrow-minded, and then you want to compete against the world [in other sports] when you waste a lot of time, good talent on a sport that sucks."

Shows how much this guy knows! Getting injured isn't the point of football. It's just something that happens to occur like 40 or 50 times a game, by accident, because of Toughness.

Anema also made some frankly ridiculous comments about the relative value of Olympic medals:

"I think that the gold medal in speedskating is just as valuable as the gold medal in basketball, and we won 22. You'll never win 22 in basketball."

In point of fact, the United States has won 21 of the 28 gold medals awarded in men's and women's basketball, with numbers 22 and 23 on the way the next time the Summer Olympics come around, so think about that, Holland.

Jillert Anema needs to check himself before he "gets dunked on by LeBron and has to go to the hospital"s himself.

According to 247Sports' Blue & Gold Illustrated, Shembo addressed the 2010 case at Saturday's NFL Combine, saying he's not surprised when questions about the investigation arise from teams during interviews, despite his name being kept out of most press reports on the case.

"I just tell [NFL team executives] the truth, I have nothing to hide," Shembo reportedly said. "No one's heard from me one time. Do you go off of one person's story? I'm still here, so I know I didn't do anything. I tell them exactly what happened."

"It's all over the internet," Shembo continued. "Everyone that does the background check can type my name in and you'll see all the stuff that people have said about me and have never heard from my mouth."

The Brooklyn Nets announced Sunday that they have signed Jason Collins, making the free-agent center the first openly gay athlete playing in one of the four major North American sports leagues.

"The decision to sign Jason was a basketball decision," said Nets general manager Billy King said in a written statement. "We needed to increase our depth inside, and with his experience and size, we felt he was the right choice for a 10-day contract."

Collins will be on a 10-day contract with the Nets and be in uniform for tonight's game against the Los Angeles Lakers.

Lobbyist "Projects" Dozens Of Members Of Congress Will Back Bill To Ban Gays From NFL

0
0

“If you even attempt to discuss these issues, people call you a bigot,” the conservative D.C. lobbyist says of his proposal.

WASHINGTON — The Washington lobbyist who announced Monday that he wants to put forward legislation banning gay people from playing in the National Football League told a reporter that the proposal is just about "common decency and civility."

Told by WJLA-ABC 7's Mike Conneen that some were suggesting the proposal is a stunt, Jack Burkman insisted, "No, hardly a stunt."

Prompted by NFL hopeful Michael Sam's coming out, the conservative Burkman described his proposed legislation, saying, "If someone has come out as a homosexual, what this legislation would do is one of two things: It would ban them from the National Football League. Two, it would give the NFL a choice: It would allow them to create separate facilities, completely separate facilities."

Human Rights Campaign spokesman Michael Cole-Schwartz shot back, "This idea sounds more like something you'd read in The Onion rather than anything close to legitimate public policy."

In the WJLA interview, Burkman discussed the uphill battle he faces against the media and "political correctness," as well.

"If you even attempt to discuss these issues, people call you a bigot. They link it to race. They want to talk about everything except the substance of the issue," he said.

"[A]s [we] speak tonight, there are people drafting it," he said when pressed for specifics, including the names of supportive lawmakers. "We have — today's the kickoff, so you're catching me on day one. We expect to have a lot of support. I'll give you the projection. Within like three weeks, within 20 days, our projections indicate we'll have 36 members in the House, six in the Senate. ... You can't be too far right in many districts in this Republican Party."

Then, Conneen pressed further:

Conneen: Jack, can you name one lawmaker for me who supports this?

Burkman: I could but I won't for them —

Conneen: Why?

Burkman: I will be able to soon.

Conneen: Why?

Burkman: To protect their privacy. We're still working on the legislation. ... But soon enough, Mike, we'll be happy to.

Of his confidence in the bill's possibilities, Burkman said, "I think I can drive it through," noting it would preempt state law and some state constitutions.

Of that, HRC Vice President Fred Sainz told BuzzFeed, "If the concept weren't so laughable, I would be enraged."
