He pulled himself up and attempted to finish the race with his broken ski, even though he no longer had a chance of winning a medal in the event.

Moments later, within sight of the finish line, the broken equipment caused Gafarov to fall again. A layer of the ski's P-Tex base stripped off and wrapped around the athlete's foot, tripping him as he tried to stand and continue the race.

As Gafarov struggled towards the finish line, Canadian cross-country coach Justin Wadsworth ran onto the track carrying a new ski.

For the first time in Olympic history, an Alpine skiing event ended in a tie for the gold medal. Slovenia's Tina Maze and Switzerland's Dominique Gisin both won the women's downhill Wednesday, completing the course in 1 minute, 41.57 seconds. The women, who are good friends, held hands as they stepped to the top of the podium.
"Maybe just one finger or one hand can change the color of a medal,'' Maze told the Associated Press.
"I'm sure glad I'm going to share this gold with Tina,'' Gisin said.
Lara Gut of Switzerland won the bronze, finishing 0.10 behind the winners. Pre-race favorites Julia Mancuso of the United States and Maria Hoefl-Riesch of Germany both had disappointing performances and finished well out of contention.
There have been eight other occasions when Olympic gold had been awarded to two competitors, most recently at the 1998 Nagano Games when Didier Cuche and Hans Knauss tied in the men's Super-G.

Shani Davis Comes Up Short In Attempt For Third Straight Gold
Davis finishes eighth as the Netherlands’ Stefan Groothius takes the title.
Entering today's competition, Shani Davis had a chance to become the first American man to ever win gold in the same Winter Olympic event three times in a row. But it wasn't meant to be: Davis finished eighth as the Netherlands' Stefan Roothius won another Dutch speedskating gold.

As this image from the home stretch indicates, Davis didn't come particularly close to winning: The blue line at the lower right shows Groothius' pace; the Netherlands' Koen Verweij, with whom Davis was skating, actually finished ahead of him.
Davis will have two more shots to medal. The 1,500-meter race, in which he has two Olympic silvers, is on Friday, and he'll also compete in next week's team pursuit event.

Russian Environmental Activist Who Criticized Sochi Olympics Jailed For Three Years
An appeals court has upheld a three-year sentence against Evgeny Vitishko, who was found guilty of hooliganism after spray-painting a fence in a case widely believed to be politically motivated.

An appeals court in the southern Russian city of Krasnodar on Wednesday upheld a three-year prison sentence against Evgeny Vitishko, an activist and geologist found guilty of hooliganism for spray-painting the fence of a top official as a form of protest against corruption and environmental degradation.
Vitishko, a 40-year-old father of two, is a member of the Environmental Watch of the North Caucasus (EWNC), a group that has criticized top officials for building extravagant mansions on national park land. He has also been among those most vocal about the damages that Russia's construction of Olympic sites have brought to the environment.
He was found guilty in 2012, along with Suren Gazaryan, another activist who has since fled Russia, and given a three-year suspended sentence. In December, however, as the Olympics neared and criticism of Russia increased, a judge decided he had broken the conditions of the suspended sentence and ordered he serve time. The appeals court on Wednesday upheld that ruling.
Activists say the case is designed to punish and silence Vitishko, who had planned to travel to Sochi to present an environmental report on the damage done in preparation for the Olympics. After formally filing for permission to go on the trip (as was required by his suspended sentence), he was detained in his hometown of Tuapse a week before the Olympics began, for "swearing at a bus stop," which is considered to be an act of hooliganism. Prior to the arrest, he had his car searched twice by officers when traveling and accused of violating his probation.
Human Rights Watch (HRW) said, "Officials had previously warned [the EWNC] about its criticisms of the environmental consequences of Olympics-related construction in Sochi. In March 2013, when the group was inspected as part of the Russian government's nationwide inspection campaign of nongovernmental groups, officials told the group not to publish the report on Sochi-related environmental damage so as 'not to harm the country.'"
HRW is currently putting pressure on the IOC to push for the release of Vitishko as well as to address the abuses currently taking place in Sochi.

This Will Be Derek Jeter's Last Season Playing Baseball
“I know they say that when you dream you eventually wake up. Well, for some reason, I’ve never had to wake up. Not just because of my time as a New York Yankee but also because I am living my dream every single day.”
Everyone always knew the day would come, and many suspected the news that Derek Jeter made official Wednesday: 2014 will be Jeter's last season playing Major League Baseball.

In a lengthy letter he released on his Facebook page, Derek Jeter wrote, "I could not be more sure. I know it in my heart. The 2014 season will be my last year playing professional baseball."

He wrote that he always said he would leave baseball when the game became less fun and more of a job. His injury-plagued 2013 season convinced him that the time had come.

Jeter said that for 20 years his only concern has been playing his best and helping the Yankees win. "That means that for 365 days a year, my every thought and action were geared towards that goal. It's now time for something new."

The Internet Gets Naked To Support Lebanese Olympian Criticized For Racy Photo Shoot
Lebanese Olympic skier Jackie Chamoun has been criticized by the media and government alike for nearly nude photos taken at a photo shoot three-years ago. The Internet thinks differently.
The country's sports and youth minister, Faisal Karami, even asked the head of the Lebanese Olympic Committee to launch an investigation “to take the required steps to [avoid] harming Lebanon's reputation and international participation."
Chamoun took to her Facebook to respond to the criticism and address the claim that she had acted inappropriately as a representative of Lebanon, which is considered the most socially liberal Arab state.
Two Guys Who Know Nothing About Fashion Critique The 15 Boldest Olympics Opening Ceremony Outfits
This is what the Olympics are all about. Right?
Logan: When it comes to fashion, I'm like whoever is the most respected fashion designer in the world. Plus I have a subscription to Details, so, yeah, I guess you could say I'm an expert.
Matt: I have three pairs of pants and I DON'T have a subscription to Details, so, yeah, I guess you could say I'm more of an expert than Logan.
Andorra
Logan: I'm pretty sure I own this sweater. OMG! Did Andorra steal my sweater? Those jerks! Wait. No. There are, like, seven of them. Nevermind. Carry on, Andorra.
Matt: I asked for a Fair Isle sweater from my mom for Christmas. I guess J. Crew must have gotten the shipping address wrong.

British Virgin Islands
Logan: I like that this outfit has NOTHING to do with the British Virgin Islands. Or maybe it does. I don't know. That bright scarf is distracting me and confusing me and I don't like it.
Matt: Power scarf. Power lifestyle.

Bermuda
Logan: Talk about a BOLD move. I mean, in terms of risk-taking, Bermuda is da bomb. Unfortunately this bomb BLEW UP IN THEIR FACE! Because it's so ugly. (Whatever, I'm proud of that one).
Matt: They're wearing shorts...in Russia...at the Winter Olympics! That's called patriotism!
