The 16 Fan Bases God Hated Most In 2013

$

It’s been a painful year, but it’ll get better. For some of you. *Tries not to look Cleveland in the eye*

New York Giants fans.

New York Giants fans.

Where do I start? This is not a fan base you should EVER have any sympathy for because they've won two Super Bowls in the past five years. But that didn’t stop them from declaring that Eli Manning is washed up and Tom Coughlin should be fired around Week 3 of the season. Giants fans are frustrated because they’re always frustrated, unless they’re winning a Super Bowl — which I repeat is quite often. Still, even I have to admit it was a bad year for them.

Washington Nationals fans.

Washington Nationals fans.

After finishing the regular season with the best record in baseball in 2012, the Nationals entered the playoffs with hot bats and a stacked pitching staff and had the St. Louis Cardinals dead and buried in NLDS — but let the series get away from them. It was a tough loss, but there was no reason why fans should have expected anything different in 2013. Stephen Strasburg, arguably the best pitcher in the game, was back with no innings limit. Brash young star Bryce Harper hit two home runs in the first game of the season! This was their year! But it wasn’t. Harper got injured and the bats were mostly ice-cold, while the pitching staff wasn’t as dominant as 2012. After being declared World Series favorites, the Nationals didn’t even make the playoffs.

"High Five" Effort Looks To Connect NFL Players And LGBT Youth

If you know a gay person, you're more likely to support LGBT rights. Such is the correlation driving the You Can Play Project's new "High Five" initiative, which aims to bring NFL players together on a one-on-one basis with LGBT youth across the country.

The You Can Play group was co-founded by Patrick Burke, an NHL executive whose father is a major figure in the hockey world and whose brother Brendan died in 2010 shortly after coming out. Its goal: inclusion of out LGBT individuals in sports culture. YCP executive director Wade Davis (who played in training camp with several NFL teams and came out after retiring) and former NFL players and NFL player-engagement execs Troy Vincent and Dwight Hollier kicked off the initiative Tuesday with a visit to the Hetrick-Martin Institute (HMI) in Manhattan, which cares for and educates LGBT youth, many of whom are homeless.

Vincent and Hollier were taken on a brief tour of the HMI campus and then met with a room of about 20 students to discuss the parallels between their lives. Vincent's testimony about the difficulty of realizing you're no longer a star performer found unexpected resonance with Tamara Williams. What followed was probably the first-ever comparison between professional football and club dancing. "The kiki scene is a lot like football," the 24-year-old Williams told Vincent. "It's all about you and your performance and who's the best. And when you're the best, that's how people look at you."

You Can Play hopes to expand the initiative to LGBT youth groups in other cities and enlist other NFL players and professional athletes into the effort.

OK, Canada, this is pretty great.

Minor league sports franchises live in relative anonymity to the casual sports fan. Their games typically don't draw huge crowds and only a handful of their players go on to make an impact on the professional level. But there is one thing minor league teams get right, and that's weird promotions.

The Calgary Hitmen are a Junior League team owned by the Calgary Flames that play in the Western Hockey League — to the average sports fan they might as well be a Quidditch team from Saturn.

Florida Attorney: DA's Scheduled Press Conference On Winston Case Means Charges Unlikely

Prosecutors handling sexual assault allegations against the Heisman frontrunner will announce results of their investigation Thursday afternoon.

The prosecutor handling the sexual assault investigation of Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston announced today the investigation was over and that he will discuss its results at a press conference tomorrow, according to The Associated Press.

State Attorney Willie Meggs has scheduled a news conference at 2 p.m. Thursday in his office to announce his findings. The investigation was "not based on a football schedule or anyone else's calendar," Meggs said in a statement. "We think we have exhausted all investigative tools."

Jason Melton, a former prosecutor in Miami and partner in a law firm that practices criminal defense around the state, said Meggs' announcement likely indicates Winston will escape criminal charges.

"You would think if you're going to make an announcement ... the announcement is not going to be something about an arrest," Melton said. "I can't think of a time that that's happened offhand."

Melton was also critical of Meggs for not stepping aside and handing over the case to a prosecutor in another part of the state, given Florida State's heavy influence in Tallahassee politics.

"I think the prosecuting authority has an obligation to the entire criminal justice system to disavow himself of the appearance of any impropriety," he said. "There's no way the public is going to have trust that he handled the case appropriately."

The Tallahassee Police Department has already faced criticism for its handling of the investigation after the alleged victim's attorney said a detective attempted to discourage them from pursuing the case.

Winston, who was named the ACC player of the year today, is also considered the frontrunner for the Heisman Trophy, awarded to the nation's top college football player. Many voters have said they're waiting to see whether Winston will be charged in the case before casting a ballot. Ballots are due by Monday.

"We currently are waiting for Meggs to finish his investigation," Winston's attorney Tim Jansen said in an email to BuzzFeed.

Heisman Frontrunner Escapes Charges In Sexual Assault Investigation

The Florida Attorney's Office in Tallahassee announced Thursday no charges would be filed against Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston in connection with a sexual assault investigation dating back to December 2012.

"We carefully examined all the evidence in this case and have concluded that no charges will be filed against anyone in this case," State Attorney Willie Meggs said today during a press conference in his office. "We have a duty as prosecutors to only file those charges if we have a reasonable likelihood of a conviction. After reviewing all of the evidence in the case, we did not feel that we could meet that burden."

Prosecutors released 86 pages of documents related to the investigation, most of them affidavits containing statements from the accuser and witnesses, including Winston's teammates and former roommates Ronald Darby and Chris Casher.

The alleged sexual assault was first reported to Tallahassee police last December, only two days shy of a year ago. The accuser's family has said she did not know the identity of her attacker until early January, when she identified him as Winston.

The Tallahassee Police Department faced criticism for its handling of the investigation after the alleged victim's attorney said a detective attempted to discourage them from pursuing the case. Tallahassee police have denied this accusation.

The alleged victim was an FSU student during the December incident, but she left school after her attorney was told by police that information about the case was about to be released to the media.

In a statement released after Meggs' press conference, Patricia Carroll, the alleged victim's attorney, thanked the State Attorney's office for a "proper investigation," but expressed worry about the message sent by the public reaction to her accusation.

"The victim in this case had the courage to immediately report her rape to the police and she relied upon them to seek justice. The victim has grave concerns that her experience, as it unfolded in the public eye and through social media, will discourage other victims of rape from coming forward and reporting," the statement read.

Winston, who was named the ACC player of the year Wednesday, is also considered the frontrunner for the Heisman Trophy, awarded to the nation's top college football player.

Many voters had said they're waiting to see whether Winston will be charged in the case before casting a ballot. Ballots are due by Monday.

Chris Huston, operator of website Heisman Pundit, predicts Winston will now roll to a landslide win.

"This decision clears the way for voters to pick Winston, provided he and FSU do not lay an egg in the ACC title game against Duke on Saturday," Huston said. "He should win by a substantial margin in the vote and sweep at least 5 of the 6 regions in the vote."

Kari Chisholm of Stiff Arm Trophy, another website dedicated to coverage of the Heisman race, remained uncertain about Winston's chances for a large victory.

"The prosecutor also didn't completely clear Winston either. So, in many ways, nothing's changed," Chisholm. "Some voters will see fire where there's smoke, and decline to vote for him. Others will take an only-the-field approach, and happily vote for him. The question for Winston is: How many of each kind of voter are there?"

Most voters contacted by BuzzFeed this afternoon indicated Winston would remain near the top of their ballots, if not already the top choice.

"Yes he is No. 1 on my ballot," said Scott Ferrell of the Shreveport (La.) Times. "Barring a five-pick loss to Duke, that shouldn't change."

If Winston had been charged with a felony, he would have been suspended under a university policy mandating that student-athletes be removed from game action until criminal charges are resolved "absent extraordinary circumstances as determined by the administration."

Winston has led the Seminoles to a No. 1 ranking and into the ACC championship game on Saturday. If the Seminoles win Saturday, they're virtually guaranteed a berth into the BCS national championship game.

UPDATE - Dec. 5, 2:45 p.m., ET: Updated with statement from alleged victim's attorney.

Jameis Winston's Teammates Told Police Sex Was Consensual

Two Florida State teammates of star quarterback Jameis Winston told authorities Winston had consensual sex with the woman who accused him of sexually assaulting her in December 2012, according to incident reports made public today.

In statements made to investigators nearly a year after the alleged assault, Ronald Darby and Chris Casher said Winston and his accuser engaged in sexual acts in Winston's bedroom in their off-campus apartment.

Casher told authorities that he watched Winston and the woman through a crack in the bedroom door and then walked into the room as part of a prank.

"The girl yelled at me, 'get out,'" Casher told authorities. "She got up off the bed and turned off the light and tried to close the door. I could hear them continuing to have sex. She never indicated that she was not a willing participant."

Darby corroborated this version of events during his interview with investigators on Nov. 13 — more than 11 months after the woman reported the incident to Tallahassee police.

Today, the Florida Attorney's Office in Tallahassee announced criminal charges would not be pressed against Winston in connection to the sexual assault investigation.

"I know there was a sexual event that occurred. One party said it was consensual. The other party said it wasn't," Meggs said. "We did not feel we had sufficient evidence to go forward to trial to prove it was not consensual."

The Tallahassee Police Department faced criticism for its handling of the investigation after the alleged victim's attorney said a detective attempted to discourage them from pursuing the case. Tallahassee police have denied this accusation.

Winston's attorney Tim Jansen said he had been told the case was closed in February. But it was was reopened in November, not long after several media outlets asked for records related to the investigation.

On Nov. 13 — the day investigators interviewed Casher and Darby, according to the incident report — the Tallahassee Police Department sent out a mass email to media outlets that includes a copy of the heavily redacted police report. There was no mention in the email that the complaint was filed against Winston. Within hours, both TMZ and the Tallahassee Democrat identified Winston as the alleged perpetrator.

Winston's accuser told authorities she and friends had been partying at Potbelly's, a bar on the edge of campus on the night of Dec. 6, 2012. The woman told police she had five to six shots and then began to feel the effects of the alcohol after her friends left. She said she remembered going to an apartment in a cab with three black men.

Once there, she said, one of the men — later identified as Winston — took her clothes off and began having sex with her as she tried to fight him off. She remembered a second man coming into the room and telling the first one to stop, the report said. Instead, the alleged assailant took her into the bathroom and finished having sex with her, she said.

According to the incident report, she said the man put her clothes on, asked her where she lived and then put her on a black scooter. A short time later, the man dropped her off at an intersection near her home.

Casher and Darby claimed the woman willfully accompanied them back to the apartment and then went into a bedroom with Winston. Casher said he saw the woman performing oral sex on Winston, and then watched as the two took off their own clothes and started to have sex.

Casher said he went into the room to see if the woman would have sex with him too, but she told him to leave. Soon after, according to the report, Casher said he tried to videotape Winston and the woman when the woman saw him and again told him to leave. Then, Casher said, the woman turned off the light and went into the bathroom with Winston.

Minutes later, Casher said he heard Winston and the woman get on his scooter and leave.
