Celtics Say Goodbye To Garnett And Pierce With Full-Page "Thank You"

$

This is how it’s done, folks.

Perennial All-Stars Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce are now officially members of the Brooklyn Nets. For 15 years Pierce played for the Boston Celtics and for the last six years, he's been with Kevin Garnett. Together, they helped bring a winning tradition and a championship back to Boston, and this morning the team took out a full-page ad in The Boston Globe to thank them.

Even though this sort of move has been done before, it's still nice to see an organization leave the business side of sports out for a second with an act of gratitude.

And Boomshakalaka goes the long jumper.

Back in the day, Foot Locker used to sponsor a celebrity dunk contest, where athletes from others sports could show off their rim-shattering skills. In 1992, the contest reached its pinnacle with contestants like Deion Sanders, Ken Griffey Jr., and Olympians Mike Conley Sr. (a triple jumper) and Mike Powell (who still holds the long jump world record). These guys threw DOWN.

Some Professional Golfers Had A "Happy Gilmore" Swing Contest

The price was (mostly) wrong for these tour pros attempting the ol’ running drive.

How far can one hit a golf ball using the legendary run-up-and-strike technique from the movie Happy Gilmore? That's what a group of European Tour golfers tried to find out during a contest two days ago at the Scottish Open Pro-Am.

Here's a textbook Gilmore.

Golfers tried several different techniques to harness the most force from their driver. Their varied approaches demand analysis (altho the final distance of most of these attempts isn't known). This one might be described as a more balanced (if somewhat conservative) form.

The End-of-Swing Knee Spasm didn't seem to make much difference.

I think being in a country [like] Russia where they've decided to introduce these new laws, basically saying we're telling children that homosexuals don't exist, is a massive step backwards for the LGBT human rights movement for the world, not just for Russia.

Andre Drummond, Teenage Dunk Monster, Murderizes NBA Summer League

Hey, what’s that behind you? It’s Andre Drummond and you’re dead.

Via: Allen Einstein / Getty Images

The dude above is Andre Drummond, a very young NBA player — 19 years old — for the Detroit Pistons. He's 6'10" and 270 pounds and, most distressingly for opponents, is made out of hot fire. He just got done playing for the Pistons' team in the NBA's Summer League, a kind of offseason minor league in which young players and journeymen can get playing experience and/or try to impress scouts and coaches. Even in this pool of players, Drummond stands out as a youngster; all 12 other guys on the Pistons' summer roster were older than him, for example. But it was the opposing players who looked physically underdeveloped by comparison to Drummond. To wit:

BLAM

BLAM

This unfortunate driving guard probably KNOWS that Andre Drummond is huge and explosive, but still can't quite account for it and, thus, is exterminated.

BLAM!!!

BLAM!!!

Boxing Andre Drummond out is something you should do in theory to prevent him from getting easy putback dunks. In practice, you have been thunder-dunked on and exterminated.

Greg Van Niel, a Cleveland Indians season ticket holder, did the impossible on Sunday: he caught four foul balls. Well, he technically only caught three balls, and just scooped up another one, but still, the man captured four foul balls.

Not all of his catches were caught on camera, but here's what we have:

Yesterday's reports that American record-holder Tyson Gay and Jamaican teammates Asafa Powell and Sherone Simpson had all tested positive for banned substances immediately tarnished the accomplishments of two of the top five sprinters (Gay and Powell) in the world of track and field.

But cheating scandals surrounding the world's elite sprinters are nothing new. In fact, it seems to be the defining characteristic of the sport.

Goosebump Watch: Phenom Matt Harvey Will Start The All-Star Game His Home Stadium

The 24-year-old New York Mets ace just cannot be stopped.

A .196 opponents batting average, league-leading 147 strikeouts, and ridiculous 4.2 wins above replacement. Yeah, New York Mets Mets ace Matt Harvey was almost a no-brainer to start tomorrow's All-Star Game at Citi Field.

There were other deserving candidates, for sure. (Hello, Clayton Kershaw!) But the chance to see this slider against the best American League hitters must be fulfilled.

Plus, Harvey's starts are always interesting. He was well on his way to a no-hitter last month when this unfortunate series of events occurred.

His American League counterpart will be Max Scherzer, who's 13-1 for Detroit this season.
